Historically, the drummer is not thought of as a composer or a creative leader. At this year’s Punkt there are several of these visionary artists who put the stereotypical notion of the drummer as a background figure to shame.
But what does it take to compose with/on a percussive instrument – what does it mean to be a composer-drummer? How is it different from composing on a tonal scale? What are the "tools of trade” used by composing drummers today?
In this distinguished panel, drummers Thomas Strønen and Erland Dahlen will share their thoughts and experiences, along with music writer Clive Bell (The Wire). What are the potential strategies, possibilities, limitations, influences and challenges of the composer-drummer?
